THE IMPORTANCE OF POTABLE WATER
According to a monitoring program of WHO and UNICEF conducted in March 2010, 87% of the world ‘s population already had sources of supply of drinking water . One of the MDG Millennium Development Goals practically achieved.
Despite this good news, drinking water is still a precious and scarce resource in some parts of the world. Although it seems a small percentage, the number of people who still do not have access to drinking water is alarming and especially embarrassing. More than 2.1 billion people lack access to safe managed drinking water services according to WHO / UNICEF in 2017 .
But not only do they have difficulty in areas where water scarcity is evident due to drought or the difficulty of obtaining resources to obtain it, but also in large industrialized cities, access to a glass of drinking water can be an arduous right to obtain.
The United Nations General Assembly in July 2010 recognized the human right to water and sanitation . They recognized the right of all human beings to have availability to an amount of water sufficient for domestic and personal use , determining between 50 and 100 liters of water per person per day .
It also found that access to water should be ” safe, acceptable and affordable ” , not more than 3% of income at home. It also determined that it would have to be physically available, determining that the source must be located less than 1,000 meters from the home and its collection should not exceed 30 minutes.
The recommendations of these international organizations in not exceeding the price of water above 3% of household income, do not seem to be sufficient to reduce the cost and guarantee at least the minimum established in the most economically disadvantaged population.
Indeed, the factors that determine the cost of drinking water are several, including the need for a purification treatment to make it drinkable is usually the most expensive. But also the storage and transport infrastructure to bring the water to the points of consumption can increase its cost significantly.
All this implies that potable water is a difficult asset to achieve with quality and sustainability.
“ The Aquaer water generator for desert climates, as we call it, has been conceived and created, mainly, to meet human needs for drinking. This must be and is our main concern to, in this way, be able to meet the needs of numerous populations that suffer from lack of water. In any case, our water generator is an excellent machine for other uses, such as conditioning rooms where there is an important latent heat load, public swimming pools, sports centers, churches, etc. ” says Enrique Veiga, inventor of the Aquaer Drinking Water Generator.
A SOLUTION WITH SPANISH SIGNATURE
Enrique Veiga is the forerunner of this great idea. The invention occurred to him during the great drought that Seville suffered between 1992 and 1995. Four years in which the shortage of rains jeopardized the supply of drinking water in the region.
« In the 1990s there was a drought in Spain that caused a great social alarm. My experience in cold storage rooms, where defrosting has to be done frequently, made me think about obtaining water by a similar method. The idea was to install a structure in the most affected town square and get water from the air. Currently we do the same, but we install the fountain in the desert. The drinking water generator for desert climates is an intelligent machine capable of adapting to climatic conditions . »
He lived there since he moved years ago from Vigo, his hometown, when the company Frigorifica Barreras de Vigo for which he worked offered him an important project to carry out in Seville. The transformation of an existing traditional fishing activity on the banks of the Guadalquivir, into a frozen fishing activity.
« The construction of the Barriers factory was carried out in a place without cranes, where a system of unloading by means of conveyor belts had to be invented. When I was projecting it in Vigo, they told me that I was crazy, that that was impossible and that nobody had done it until that moment. It was a success: from the different wineries of the ships the fish blocks arrived at the factory without anyone touching them, and there they were classified, packaged and stored. We got to make Seville the second most important port of Spain in frozen discharge, after Vigo . »Comments Enrique Veiga.
This project had him occupied for 16 years, then he formed his own activity, the Aquaer Generators.
In his long professional career he has many awards. His training began as a Mechanical Industrial Expert by the Vigo School and as a Refrigeration Engineer at the Institut Français du Froid Industriel in Paris. He later traveled to Canada and Norway where he graduated in Montreal in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques. Since 1996 he is the CEO of Aquaer Generators .
His well-deserved reputation as an inventor of the drinking water generator by condensation of water vapor from the air for desert climates, led him to win the prize for the best inventor of the Spanish Inventors Club .
« In the beginning, nobody invents with the intention of receiving any prize. The greatest satisfaction is to see that the idea works and, mainly, that it serves or is useful for something. I’ve been lucky! My invention works, is useful and has also been recognized. »
But he is also the inventor of other ingenious inventions: « Our generator capable of obtaining water in desert climates is a product that has such a global impact that it has everything totally overwhelmed to the entire Aquaer team, and our greatest effort is dedicated to the construction of these generators. But i also have other patents, with working prototypes, such as frozen product preservation chambers; bricks with a sound insulation of 95%, capable of soundproofing any premises, and an energy autogenerator of which I have the prototype, and I hope to present it soon. It will be a revolution ! »
THE ADVANTAGES OF THE Aquaer DRINKING WATER GENERATOR
The truth is that such an extraordinary invention, Matt Damon would have wanted to have it in The Martian with which he put together to get water on Mars that he needed to water his potatoes.
Although the water that would have been obtained would be too little given that on Mars it is estimated at only 0.01 the water in the atmosphere as a vapor. And in addition, the Aquaer generator needs at least 8% of ambient humidity to generate potable water . But everything will come.
Here on Earth it works great, even in desert environments. Take advantage of the absolute humidity of the air by condensing it with the support of a refrigeration installation .
The machine can generate drinking water in environments of up to 50 ° C temperature and a relative humidity of 8%, compared to other generators that obtain condensation with a relative humidity of 60% or 80%, the Aquaer generator is unique because of its effectiveness and efficiency .
The extraordinary thing is that it can produce water, but drinking water similar to that of rain at a temperature of 12 ° C totally suitable for consumption . A system filtration and protective anti-bacterial UV , ensures the physical, chemical and micro-biological characteristics required by Nutritional Code. It can also be used in areas with environmental pollution, such as a city.
The machines have different capacity , they can range from 50 liters per day the smallest one, to much greater productive capacity, which can generate up to 5,000 liters of drinking water per day . What is an optimal remedy to provide drinking water to an entire community. Taking into account that production modules can be added until the necessary requirement is achieved.
This is the case of the “ Namwater ” project , a proposed initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of Namibia . A country with a large area of desert and with evident water deficiencies, which proposed a feasibility study to acquire 1,500 units of the Aquaer Generator , with the objective of supplying water with extensions exposed to droughts and favoring the development of the area . Today they already have Aquaer Generators, so positive results are expected soon.
This type of generator is very versatile , and can be used both for small environments or structures, as a community of homes or small businesses, as in large establishments, such as stadiums, sports centers, schools, ministerial, business or military buildings.
As it can also be used in emergency situations such as natural disasters, refugee camps and all kinds of places exposed to war or misery.
The variety of places and structures where water is occurring is very extensive, so the possibility of having an economical, practical, and efficient drinking water generating system with zero environmental impact is a technological solution and an innovative advance that looks towards the cities of the future automated .
Water is practically necessary in all types of public and private buildings and establishments, so it is not surprising the great demand and expectation that this product has generated. Worldwide, both private companies and public entities are interested in acquiring the Aquaer Generator, but also private and NGOs.
HOW IT WORKS AND HOW IS YOUR MAINTENANCE
The machine is installed outdoors , connected to an electrical source , although there is also the version with solar panels that does not need any external electricity source.
Water production is carried out day and night , automatically and independently of climatic conditions, with a self-regulation system that guarantees its autonomy.
The generators are totally isolated and protected against oxidation and ultraviolet solar rays .
It does not produce noise or pollutants for the environment. No type of solid or gaseous waste is emitted abroad.
The Aquaer generator prototype was tested and certified by the Institute of Aerospace Technology INTA , in extreme weather conditions, without any environmental impact.
As if that were not enough, it does not need specialized maintenance , it is enough to keep the filters clean and replace them when necessary, an operation that can be done by anyone because it does not require any kind of skill or special knowledge.
The machines of various dimensions according to their productive capacity, can be comfortably transported in any medium suitable for goods, such as trucks or vans.
A SOLIDARY ISSUE
As we have said, more than 2.1 billion people lack access to safe managed drinking water services , according to WHO / UNICEF in its 2017 report .
Water scarcity affects 4 out of 10 people according to the WHO . And always, according to WHO / UNICEF in 2017, 4.5 billion people still lack safe managed sanitation services .
The lack of water causes the death of more than 1.5 million children , of which 340,000 children under 5 die each year from diarrheal diseases associated with the lack and contamination of water .
The agriculture accounts for 70% of global water withdrawals according to FAO .
The United Nations General Assembly in July 2010 recognized the human right to water and sanitation . A historic date to whose commitment we are bequeathed.
They admitted the right of all human beings to have access to a sufficient amount of water for domestic and personal use , determining between 50 and 100 liters of water per person per day .
It also determined that it should be safe, acceptable and affordable , the price of which should not exceed 3% of household income. It also determined that it had to be physically accessible, indicating that the fountain should be located less than 1,000 meters from the home and its collection time should not exceed 30 minutes.
An alarming and really embarrassing data, taking into account that approximately 75% of all industrial water withdrawals are used for energy production according to UNESCO in 2014 and not to cover these more essential and priority human needs .
” The idea was born as a social function to provide drinking water to all people who do not have access to it, ” says Enrique Veiga.
Today, Aquaer Generator is collaborating with NGOs and developing a simpler model powered by solar energy so that it can be easily transported and used without the need for additional electrical energy.
« We are making machines capable of making about 50 liters in the desert. Such a machine is easily attachable to solar panels, easy to install anywhere without problems. You tell a Bushman in Kalahari that he will have 50 liters of water a day and people don’t believe it! » , Explains the inventor.
” What happens is that people who most need water are those who do not have money to buy it, “ says Veiga.
The cost per liter of water will depend on the price of Kwh. In Namibia the cost of electricity is 30.28 cents per Kwh, so 1 liter of water costs 0.01 cents. Getting the price of water to decrease so that everyone can have access is a social necessity .
” In the short term we will try to improve the serial production system, reduce costs and increase performance, ” adds Veiga.
EFFORTS MUST CONTINUE
It is not enough to increase the percentage of the Millennium Development Goal . There are still too many people suffering from a shortage of drinking water and sanitation services. Reaching 100% and eradicating this scandalous infamy is a social effort that we all must take seriously and act.
The Aquaer drinking water generator is an economical system of obtaining water in sufficient abundance and of quality to be able to supply the need of the world population. Why not? An idea at the service of the common good necessary and possible. A viable response to the resolution to the 6th goal of sustainable development adopted by UN for 2030 .
“ We are determined to end poverty and hunger throughout the world by 2030, to combat inequalities within and between countries, to build peaceful, fair and inclusive societies, to protect human rights and to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and to ensure lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources »UN General Assembly, September 25, 2015.
Perhaps the greatest challenge to which the current world has committed itself implies, of course, a common and universal commitment , but each one has the capacity to set their own goals for the fulfillment of these objectives.
A social commitment to which we are all called to respond to a greater or lesser extent, one way or another, but which no one can ignore. It will depend on the will of public and private authorities to realize a right that every human being has and on which their survival depends : the right of water .
